Via the tranquil Kapellenstraat, which also branches off from the harbor, we reach the Grote Kerk (Great Church or Church of Our Lady), which lives up to its name. The church, whose predecessor was built in the middle of the 14th century, is always visible in the city. In 1472, a canonry was established here, which initiated a monumental new building. However, this was never completed and was also badly damaged by fire disasters and external use. The monumental torso without choir, tracery and vault towers almost threateningly over the low surrounding houses. Today it is used for cultural purposes.
The filigree construction of a cistern from 1551 in front of the southern transept facade acts as a counterpoint. This was promised to the Scottish wool traders as a water reservoir and therefore certainly not by chance has echoes of Tudor Gothic.

The Grote Kerk (Great Church) is a large building with a rich history. Built in the 14th century, it has been used by various religions and institutions throughout the centuries. Construction stopped in the 16th century, as the church was deemed too large for the small town of Veere. From then on, it served as a multifunctional building. The church boasts a strategic location, offering expansive views of both sea and land. During the French occupation, Veere was heavily bombarded by the English fleet. Fortunately, the church remained undamaged. During this period, the upper floors were used as a hospital by the French army. Horses were stabled on the ground floor.

After 1815, under the new Dutch regime, the church continued to serve as a military function for many years. From 1839 onward, it became a hospital again, then a shelter, and so on.
Today, it is empty and used as an exhibition space. In clear weather, a climb to the top is recommended. Once you reach the top, you have a beautiful view of the polders, the charming town with its harbour, the fortress of Veere, the Veerse Meer and the sea.
