On the wild and dry stretch of Asterousia, we come across the abandoned village and church of St. Nicholas (celebrated on December 6th). The church was an outpost of the Koudoumas Monastery and the village is mentioned in a document from 1577.
During World War II, in 1942, the monks of Koudoumas were expelled by the Germans and took refuge in the monastery of St. Nicholas where they kept their relics. During the war, the monastery hosted the guerrillas of the region.
