If you take a closer look at the rock, you will see the many washouts, they look like rat holes. So the rock got this name Rattenfels. He is also a landmark and knight stone, which bears the number 164 and is from the Palatine Forest Association in care.

“The inscription of the Ritterstein is carved into a rock in a group of rocks above the Diemerstein ruins. This was popularly called the Rat Rock because numerous erosions can be seen in the rock that look similar to rat holes.

This weathering is due to erosion caused by the prevailing weather conditions. The group of rocks is a sandstone formation that is probably overlaid by a spherical rock zone. Such rocks contain spherical structures that have eroded into this shape due to different iron enrichments in the rock. These structures are usually surrounded by loose material and can therefore easily fall out of the rock or be detached. This is how the supposed rat holes appeared here. Such peculiarities often occur in the Palatinate Forest, especially in the Pirmasens area.”
