Limburg Cathedral, also known as St. George's Cathedral after its patron saint St. George, stands above the old town of Limburg an der Lahn next to Limburg Castle. Its high location on the limestone cliff above the Lahn ensures that the cathedral is visible from far away. It has seven towers, more than any other church in Germany.

The history of Limburg Cathedral dates back to the 10th century. The first church on this site was built between 910 and 914 and was dedicated to Saint George. In 1058 it was elevated to the status of a collegiate church. In the following centuries the cathedral was rebuilt and expanded several times. The current church was largely built in the 13th century under the rule of the Limburg counts. The cathedral received its characteristic architecture and furnishings under the influence of the nearby Trier building workshop.
