At one point, more than fifty graves were visible along El Camino del Diablo. Most have since been reclaimed by the desert, but O'Neill's grave remains. Serving as an unofficial alter to the Camino, stories of its history vary wildly, with perhaps the most colorful claiming Mr. O'Neill, drunk and sleeping in a washout, became the unwitting victim of a flash flood, earning himself the title of the "only person to drown in the Sonoran Desert." True or not, visitors still stop by this grave and leave mementos, from coins to bullets to water, in tribute to the countless who've died in pursuit of new lives and better fortune.
