The "Hörder Fackel" was a striking landmark of Dortmund-Hörde, which was erected in 1976 at the oxygen steelworks. The tall chimney was used to burn off excess gas and was a striking symbol of the steel industry, especially at night, thanks to the flame that was visible from afar. After the steelworks was shut down in 2001, there were efforts to preserve the torch as a monument, but it was ultimately blown up on January 24, 2004 to make room for the redesign of the area around today's Phoenix Lake.
Today, a memorial plaque at the Phoenix Lake commemorates the "Hörder Fackel" and its importance for the history of the district. The plaque is part of the Industrial Heritage Route and offers visitors an insight into Hörde's industrial past and the region's transformation from a steelworks to a modern local recreation area.
