The historic half-timbered house was an important rest stop on the stagecoach route that connected Stuttgart with Strasbourg. There are even rumors that Napoleon Bonaparte spent the night here. However, it is proven that Frederick I took a rest here with his men in 1811 and drank 11 bottles of champagne, 15 bottles of the best wine, and a lot of other alcoholic beverages, especially beer, water and coffee. His bill was 244 guilders and 27 kreuzers. In short, the king and his 17 companions drank and devoured a good 2000 euros by today's standards, and that at a time when severe crop failures were plaguing the people.

The well-known Nagold half-timbered building (1697) was originally called the "Gasthof zur Sonne". Over the course of its history it has hosted many distinguished guests, such as Duke Carl Eugen and King Friedrich of Württemberg.

In 1807, the new postmaster Johann Sebastian Gschwindt set up a post office in the inn; in 1812, the post stable was added for changing horses on the Stuttgart-Freudenstadt stagecoach route.

The magnificent half-timbering was first uncovered from the previous plaster by the Stuttgart architect Nachbauer. The building was renovated again in 1984/85 when it was sold. The stately and artistically significant inn sign was made in 1907 by the blacksmith Baldenhofer from Freudenstadt.
