This square was successively named Place Notre-Dame-la-Neuve, after the parish church, which became an auditorium in the mid-16th century; Place de la Fromagerie, because of the cheese hall located next to Saint-Pierre; and Rue du Marché-au-Blé, because it housed a grain hall.
The origin of the name Taconnery is uncertain: it comes either from the word "fun," meaning leather, used by the shoemakers established there, or from the surname Tacon, which was important in the 15th and 16th centuries, although it is unknown whether it was owned by a house on this square.
