As early as 1353, documents mention a town hall in Malmö that stood north of St. Peter's Church, between the old cemetery and Adelgatan, the oldest street in the city.

In the northwestern part of today's Stortorget, the large Helgeand Monastery was located in the Middle Ages. The monastery, with its church, garden and cemetery, took up a quarter of the current square.[3] The Reformation in Denmark (which included Malmö in the 14th century) led to the then mayor Jörgen Kock having the monastery demolished and the current Great Market built in its place. The demolition took place in 1536–1538. In the 16th century, the market square developed into one of the largest squares in the Nordic countries, so it was to receive a representative town hall, and the east side of the Stortorget was chosen as the building site.
