Until the 19th century, three fountains on the town square provided water for the citizens and were also central places of communication and social life. In accordance with their location, they were referred to in the earliest documents simply as the "upper, middle and lower fountains on the square". The upper or fish fountain was located between the Oswald Church and the Heimathaus until 1884. It was a simple, square structure with a turret-like central column, the basin of which served as a fish cooler. The lower or Floriani fountain, first mentioned in 1549 and initially made entirely of wood, was redesigned in 1679 from red marble and in 1767, instead of the painted figure of Florian on the column, an oak wood statue of Florian [...] was placed on top. In 1894 it had to make way for the monumental Luitpold or Truna fountain, which in turn fell victim to the war metal collections in the 1940s. The modern adventure fountain by Gauting artist Dieter Clarenbach continues the interrupted fountain tradition at this location since 1999, marking the completion of the renovation and redesign of the town square.
