It is believed that the 15th century in the beginning, the first church in Rumšiškės was built by King Jogaila. Its origin is told by an old legend, which tells that the king with his wife, Queen Jadvyga, and a group of clergy were riding a sleigh from Vilnius through Rumšiškes to Kaunas. It was early spring. The kings carriage broke through the weak ice of the stream and was in danger of sinking. Jadvyga made vows - if she is saved, she will build a church in that place. I managed to save myself. On Jadvyga's instructions, a small wooden church was built on a small hill, at a dangerous place, by the hands of Rumšiški craftsmen. The stream was named "Nadzeja" in Polish, which means "hope".
