The agora was a central public building in ancient Greek city-states. The literal meaning of the word is "gathering place." It was typically the center of the city's athletic, artistic, spiritual, and political life.

Sanctuaries that became centers of athletic, musical, and dramatic competitions, as well as festivals and celebrations honoring a god or goddess, typically featured such structures. The gymnasium, where sprinting and long-distance running were practiced alongside discus and javelin throwing, also served as a place for learning, philosophical discussions, and other intellectual activities. Furthermore, a gymnasium in antiquity was highly standardized both architecturally and functionally and played a key role in the physical and general education of young men.

The gymnasium structure became a common feature throughout the Greek world and was adopted by the later Romans, giving rise to the vast multipurpose complex known as the Roman baths. Adjacent to the gymnasium was usually a palaistra, or stadium.
