On the shore of Lake Vištytis in the Šilelis Forest, fresh water gushes from a spring, popularly called the Holy Spring. People's stories say that the water of this spring was truly exceptional. After watering their eyes with it, the blind regained their sight and hard-to-heal wounds quickly closed. And nowadays there are stories of miraculous healings, many believe in its miraculous power. Believing in the powers of the Holy Spring, people who have traveled from the most remote corners splash water and erect crosses on the hill near the spring.
Year after year, the number of crosses increases, and the locals already call the hill near the spring the Hill of Crosses. When people began to believe in the power of spring water, there is no exact information. This more interesting incident was heard from the stories of the old people.
Before World War I, a poor farmer saw St. The Virgin Mary asked him to erect a cross at the spring. The poor man could not fulfill the request even if he wanted to, because he had neither a horse, nor a cart, nor wood to build it, but only an ax. After telling his wife, he had forgotten the request. After some time, he again dreamed of the Mother of God, who assured the man in a dream that only he could build the cross. After dreaming the same dream for the third time, in the morning he went to his neighbor and told him everything. He calmed him down and promised to help him. They went to the forest, cut down an oak tree and soon found a cross near the spring.
Believing that the power of God was here, people began to visit the cross, pray, splash themselves with spring water and believe that the water heals various diseases, especially eye diseases. Apparently, faith can really work miracles...
