In Peru, the church of San Pedro Apóstol de Andahuaylillas is called "the Sistine Chapel of the Americas", and in a way the subordinate comparison would be justified: this architecture is one of the most surprising and beautiful songs of religious art, silent testimony of the Andean people.
The church of San Pedro Apóstol of Andahuaylillas must have been built at the end of the 16th century, since one of its murals, signed by Luis de Riaño, bears the date 1626. These murals were commissioned by the then parish priest Juan Pérez Bocanegra, author of the Hanacpachap cussicuinin (Hanaq Pachap Kusikuynin = Joy of Heaven), the first polyphonic vocal work composed in the entire American continent and whose texts are mostly in Quechua. It is a temple dedicated to Saint Peter, although the main altar is presided over by the Virgin of the Rosary. The Jesuits were in charge of it between 1628 and 1636. It consists of a single nave with side chapels. Its wide walls are made of clay.
