This ox sculpture by Jack Marsden Mayer was commissioned by the Whangamōmona Republic in 2019 to commemorate the Republic's 30th anniversary. It was augmented with yoke and log by local resident Walter Pease.
It represents the pioneers who farmed this area, built roads, railways, shops, hotels, houses and fought through the Great Depression, the flu epidemic and two world wars.
Before vehicles, there were only teams of oxen and horses that carried the saws and pulled the logs from the forests to the sawmills where they were made into lumber and some teams were even used to pull the stagecoach!
