Camp Beverlo is certainly known to anyone who has ever been near Leopoldsburg or drove via Leopoldsburg towards Peer en Bree. But the enormous military domain extends over various municipalities, including sub-municipalities and hamlets of Beringen such as here and of course...Beverlo. While the northern part of the largest military domain in Flanders is used as a shooting field, the southern part is used as a training area. What does that have to do with this place? Well, Koersel Kapelleke and the area around De Watersnip (so to speak, Zwarte Beek Nature Reserve) are located next to the domain and that southern part. And that not only means a lot of nature (for which the military domains are very important for Limburg) but in this case also the start of a beautiful cycle path where you can also walk with an information board about Camp Beverlo from a natural point of view at this exact spot. This path is not only beautiful, here and there you can also see bits of open terrain in the distance (Camp Beverlo has enormous heath and sand plains and beautiful stream stretches). Just as cool is that it takes you from Koersel Kapelleke and Zwarte Beek Nature Reserve to Helderbeek-Terril Nature Reserve with the Zolder slag heap where you have top views. You must stay strictly on the path, but if you really want to explore that area, you can always visit De Watersnip van Natuurpunt to follow one of the guided walks that they organize there. Finally, many nature activities near the camp (Molenheide but also further north) are aimed at creating natural corridors to enable cross-pollination between all those areas. Camp Beverlo is one of the largest heathlands in Flanders (55 km2). Due to its vastness and military use, beautiful pieces of nature have been preserved. The domain is a patchwork of dry and wet heathlands, inland dunes, fens, seepage zones and marshy depressions. The Zwarte Beek crosses the landscape and forms one of the best preserved stream valley landscapes in the Benelux.
