Winckelmannstrasse leads to St. Peter's Church, the oldest surviving church in Stendal. It may originally have been the church of the village of Wusterbusch, which the Margrave donated to the town of Stendal in 1281. Before 1300, it was described as standing outside the city walls, and later as standing inside them. The first building, dating from around 1250, was constructed of fieldstone. A Romanesque round-arched doorway on the south side of the chancel still survives from this. Around 1300, the High Gothic brick building was built using fieldstone for the chancel. The spire, in its current form with its four dwarf turrets, dates from 1583. The church has a brick rood screen added in the 15th century.

The church was probably built in sections in the brick Gothic style in the period after 1285, with the chancel being completed in 1306 in fieldstone masonry.
