The windmill in Stommeln - today the landmark of this district - was given to the community in December 1571 by the Duke of Jülich in return for payment of 300 guilders compensation - this is the earliest documented mention of the mill, so that its age cannot be clearly stated.
In 1704 the mill - at that time still as a wooden post mill - was rebuilt for unknown reasons.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the community of Stommeln became the owner of the mill. The current tower windmill was built on the Mühlenberg in 1860-64.
