The pumping station made it possible to use the meadows near Greifswald permanently and to build the new cemetery and the residential area on the Kampswiesen. Every year, many liters of water are pumped/drawn from the original fen in the Ryck lowlands.
To ensure that this happens evenly, the water is collected in a reservoir in front of the pump house. This is the so-called Mahlbusen, which is located south of the house here.
The water is channeled into the Ryck via the small canal on the north side.
The water comes from the wet meadows via the ditches. The deeper the ditch, the more water is drawn out of the topsoil. This happens through gravity and pumping from the ditches, because then the water flows in from the ground (fen).
There is a wide reed belt on the bank of the Ryck. This means that the bank is flat, but be careful, it does not mean that you can stand in the reed belt. The solid ground is often much deeper than you think.
