The GDR sealed off the demarcation line to the Federal Republic more tightly due to the regulation on measures on the demarcation line between the German Democratic Republic and the western occupation zones of May 26, 1952. A 5 km wide exclusion zone was set up along the entire length of the border to contain the increasing number of refugees. Traffic near the border with inter-zone passes was abolished. Of the 345,000 people affected who lived in the exclusion zone, 11,000 were expropriated and forcibly resettled because they were suspected of having helped people escape. The border strip was cleared and strictly monitored. Crossing the border was only permitted with special permission and with a stamp in the identity card.
