Hammerhead tower of Erin 3 mine
A winding frame above shaft 7 and a winding tower above shaft 3 keep the memory of the former Erin mine alive in Castrop-Rauxel. For this mine, founded by the Irishman Thomas Mulvany in 1866, a third shaft was sunk in the Schwerin district from 1889, but the winding tower was not built until 1918 to 1921. It is one of the few hammerhead towers preserved in the Ruhr area and is now the oldest in Westphalia.
Its monument status derives primarily from its technical history. Advances in steel construction technology and the introduction of the electric winding machine made it possible to place the winding machine with drive pulley vertically above the shaft, so that the rope hangs directly down into the shaft. This made it unnecessary to build a machine house and saved space. In addition to the hoisting machine, the driver's cabs also had to be included, which is why the "engine house" protrudes over the base of the tower, giving the building its typical shape and name.
The hammerhead tower of Erin was one of only ten towers that were built in the Ruhr area in the 1920s. From 1937 until the mine was closed in 1983, shaft 3 was only used for cable travel; the coal left the mine through shaft 7 on the edge of the town center of Castrop-Rauxel.
The hammerhead tower was restored in 1993 with state funds. The town of Castrop-Rauxel created a "Celtic tree circle" around it, thus honoring the founder of the mine. The tree circle served as a calendar for his Celtic ancestors, and each individual tree in it represented a certain characteristic that could be transferred to humans. "In 1858, the Irish mining entrepreneur William Thomas Mulvany consolidated several mining properties in the Castrop area and named the new mining area "Erin" in memory of his hometown.

After the sinking of shafts 1 and 2 on Karlstrasse, in the immediate vicinity of the old town of Castrop-Rauxel, coal mining began there in 1867. In the following years, several firedamp explosions and water ingress occurred at Erin, which led to the mine's operations coming to a standstill in 1877.

In 1882/1883, Friedrich Grillo founded the new "Erin Union", took over the flooded mine workings of the Erin mine and successfully drained them.
