The Große Nister is an approx. 64 km long tributary of the Sieg and over a length of approx. 30 km characterizes the charming landscape of the protected landscape area Nistertal. Prall and sliding slopes line the bank zones of the meandering river course between Marienstatt and Helmeroth and provide important information for geomorphology, i.e. the investigation of form-forming processes on the earth's surface. The course of the river of the great Nister has often changed its course in its history, especially when it encountered hard rock and had to look for another course in a roundabout way. The meandering course of the large nests between Marienstatt and Helmeroth is 26.5 km long with a straight line distance of 7 km.
