Our Lady of Seven Sorrows and Saint Joseph is the parish church of Schoonaarde. The building has been recognized as a protected monument since 2003. A chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Seven Sorrows already stood in Schoonaarde at the beginning of the 15th century.
The current brick church was built in 1830 in the Neoclassical style, based on a design by the Dendermonde architect J. Beeckman. The building has three naves under a gable roof. In 1857, the choir with its oak choir stalls, the sacristy, and the eastern tower were added. This date is noted on a memorial stone on the outer wall of the sacristy.
For safety reasons, the top floor of the tower was demolished in 1964 and never rebuilt. It was not until 1980 that the tower was given a new spire, this time a low one.

Originally the church was a chapel, built in the 15th century and dedicated to Our Lady of 7 Woes. At that time, Schoonaarde belonged to the Wichelen parish and the chapel was served by a chaplain, assistant pastor in Wichelen. Only during the winter months could the residents of Schoonaarde fulfill their Sunday duties here on site.
In 1830, permission was obtained from the municipality of Wichelen to enlarge the chapel. The church was officially inaugurated by the bishop on April 21, 1844.
In 1857 the tower, choir and sacristies of the current church were built. The original tower was demolished in 1964. After the high spire and top floor were demolished, it was not until 1980 that the remainder of the tower was finished with a new short spire.
