The Gräfenbrunnen fountain is a karst spring. It originates in the Wachsenburggraben, part of the Eichenberg-Gotha-Arnstadt-Saalfeld fault zone. In this zone, groundwater rises to the surface due to the damming effect of the clay layers found here. The spring is said to have had a very large discharge in earlier times, comparable to the Mühlberger Spring (2,000 liters per minute). In the 19th century, the spring was filled in and drained. Today, it is only recognizable by an outlet pipe.

Her first mention was the source as Geffenbrunnen 1600. In the field maps it is referred to as Grefenbrunnen. Today's name is common since about 1800. In the Middle Ages, the spring supplied the castle peers with fresh water. It was transported over a distance of about 2000 m and at a height difference of 110 m of donkeys in water containers, presumably made of leather (Wikipedia).
