The market square is the only square in the old town of Esslingen that is not historical. Until 1811 the square was built over by the Katharinenspital, the city's first hospital. After that it was called Spitalplatz for a long time. The actual market square was the town hall square at the time. Today the market square is a place where people like to celebrate. The Citizens' Festival, the Onion Festival and the Esslingen Medieval Market & Christmas Market take place there every year.
