The mill was built in 1801 as a peeling mill, probably using a mill from Mensin Rifle. Structurally speaking, the mill was built purely as a peeling mill. However, during the Second World War, both milling stones were removed and afterwards a pair of milling stones was installed. Due to the lack of a stone attic, the grinding stones are located below the rack level, which means that the grinding stones are driven by an additional transmission, which is quite unique. The mill was equipped with the self-yielding system. The mill was shut down in 2006 due to its poor condition. Between 2008 and 2011 the mill was restored piece by piece and is now fully operational again. The mill, which is currently owned by the Winsum Mill Foundation, is regularly put into operation by volunteers.
