Although the area in front of the Philharmonic Hall and the police station was built up until the destruction of the Second World War, the open space now known as Plac Solidarnósci is a historically important site in the city's recent history. In 1970, a demonstration was shot down by police here; among the 16 killed were bystanders, such as the young woman who watched the events from her room window. A sculpture of an angel and a memorial plaque in the square commemorate these sad events. To better convey these and other moments of recent history—after Gdansk, Szczecin was the center of the Solidarity trade union in the early 1980s—the "Centrum Dialogu Przelomy" (Centre for Dialogue in Przelomy) was built beneath the square. The project of the Szczecin National Museum (architect Robert Konieczny/kwk promes), which with its undulating surface initially appears to the uninitiated as a great paradise for skaters (and is accordingly accepted), is one of five museum squares:
