The architecturally most valuable monument of Arnstadt rises in the western part of the historic city center directly on the city wall. The first mention of the city refers to this territory. The Liebfrauenkirche is after Naumburg Cathedral the most important church in Central Germany from the Romano-Gothic transitional period. Until the 16th century, it was the church of the Counts of Schwarzburg.

Built between 1180 and 1330, the three-aisled arched basilica with galleries features precious medieval furnishings such as the tombs of the counts of Schwarzenburg (black burial chapel), a late-Gothic winged altar (1498), the "beautiful Madonna" (c. 1415) of lindholz and important stained glass windows , At the beginning of the 19th century, the church was used by foreigners and fell into ruin. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was renovated and neo-Gothic changed. In the mid-fifties to the early seventies of the last century, an extensive reconstruction took place.
