The castle chapel, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was mentioned as early as the 14th century. At that time it belonged to the parish of St. Peter and Paul (Eschweiler). Over the centuries, the chapel developed into today's church. As the town became more populated, the castle chapel no longer served as a church not only for the castle residents, but also for the local parishioners. The service was provided by Eschweiler clergy.

Between 1592 and 1606, the lord of the castle, Jan von Efferen, made the chapel available to the Lutherans for their church services. It was only his successor, Odilia von Efferen, who forbade the Lutherans from using the chapel in 1608. From 1614 onwards, regular services were celebrated in the chapel again. It was now held by Augustinian canons from the Aachen convent. The rector, Adam Eix (1632-1664), claimed more and more parish rights. In 1668, the first person to be baptized was entered in the church register on October 17th, at the same time as the four baptisms of the court clerk's children that had taken place since May 6th, 1664 were added (marriages since 1687 and deaths since 1738, deaths of the Lutheran and Calvinist congregations from 1669 -1687). In 1745 the Holy Trinity was elevated to a parish church.

Until then, the parish church in Stolberg belonged to the Jülich deanery in the Cologne diocese.

As part of the founding of the diocese of Aachen in 1804, Stolberg St. Trinity became the parish church in the canton of Eschweiler of this diocese. As a result, the second parish patron, St. Lucia, became increasingly important, so that the name of the parish church changed to St. Lucia, apparently without this change being precisely documented.

In 1888 the Unterstolberg pastoral care district was separated from the mother parish of St. Lucia as the parish of St. Mary of the Assumption. In 1925 the Stolberg deanery was established, which was finally divided into the Stolberg-North and Stolberg-South deaneries in 1973.
