The cap windmill in the town centre of Laer, Steinfurt district (NRW), replaced a dilapidated post mill in 1873 on the Schulzenhof Welling, which was first documented in 1248 and at that time still belonged to the Lords of Ahaus.

Laer lies in the heart of the Münsterland region and has retained its harmonious village character. The Ewaldibach stream babbles through the tranquil village, feeding the centrally located village pond. Here also stands the restored cap mill, now once again sporting its (occasionally rotating) sails.
