The Orlova Chuka cavern is located in the rocky valley of the Cherni Lom River, 45 km south of the capital of the Russe region. It is one of the most interesting caves in Bulgaria. There are several dripstones more than 1 million years old and about 10,000 bats live inside the cavern. The species of „flying mice“ that live in this cavern are unique. The maze of caves amounts to more than 30 km.
Humans lived in the caves about 200,000 – 40,000 years ago due to the relatively high constant temperature. Spearheads, flint tools, axes and pieces of pottery were discovered in the cavern. It used to be inhabited by cave bears.
