Dolines are karst funnels. So far I have only noticed them in the Rhön and I thought it was nice to discover this one on the hike.

A doline (from the Slavic dolina "valley"), also called a sinkhole, karst funnel or karst hole, is a chimney, funnel or bowl-shaped depression with a mostly round or elliptical floor plan in karst areas. Its diameter usually varies between 2 and 200 meters, but can also be more than a kilometer. Its depth ranges from 2 to more than 300 meters. Dolines give karst areas their characteristic appearance.[1] They can occur in high density: a maximum of 782 dolines per square kilometer have been described in the Alps,[2] 187 in the Taurus.[3] Solution dolines always predominate over shaft dolines. Such doline landscapes form a so-called polygonal karst, in which the catchment area of the individual dolines is often interlocked with the others and these can thus fill the entire space of a landscape.
