At the beginning of the 20th century, the decision was made to open up the city of Wels to the north with a new part of town called "Neustadt".
The desire for a church was brought to the diocese of Linz by the city pastor Josef Flotzinger and found in Bishop Dr. Franz Maria Doppelbauer great support.
In 1900 a church building association was formed and the planned project soon found just as much support among the population. The construction was entirely financed by donations.
