Kulpin, a place that was first mentioned in documents in 1228 and whose
founding began in the time of the Slavs, who settled in the Lauenburg region around 1150. The earlier spellings for the place, such as Colpyn, Culpyn or Calepin come
from the Wendish and mean "Kolb" = swan in the phonetic derivation.
This water bird has accompanied the place truly and symbolically over the centuries up to the present day. The symbolic representation on the boulder
in the center of the town, on stickers and printed items of clothing are proof of this.
In the Middle Ages, Kulpin had a robber baron's castle, on the site of which the
Kulpin estate (owned by the von Keiser family since 1919) can be found today. Over the centuries, the estate with its widely branched holdings in the northern district
not only shaped the town of Kulpin. The estate has been united with the rural community since 1928.
