The Stade city harbor is located on the Schwinge river, which flows into the Elbe near Stadersand. If you follow the course of the Schwinge, you will reach the city harbor after 4.5 km. Here you can moor at 160 m of modern floating piers with power connections and then you are right in the city center. The harbor is equipped with a harbor master's office, sanitary facilities and water taps. The harbor is particularly busy with guest boats on weekends.

Construction of a new harbor basin began in 1880. Due to the steady growth in cargo handling, a modern harbor crane was built in 1927, which can still be admired today as an industrial monument.

The then-modern, 16-meter-high crane system was built as a portal-type rotating crane by the Berlin manufacturer Bamag-Meguin. The crane was designed as a rail-mounted overhead crane and could thus be moved almost the entire length of the quay wall, greatly simplifying the unloading of cargo. The riveted steel lattice structure had a radius of approximately twelve meters and a load capacity of 2.5 tons. After the Second World War, freight volumes in the Stade harbor grew rapidly, and the old overhead crane was supplemented by a mobile crane. After the dilapidated brick wall had to be replaced in 1957, the crane was relocated to the eastern end of the harbor and the rail track was removed. At the end of the 1960s, freight handling shifted to the mouth of the Schwinge River, and the crane was scheduled for demolition after the city of Stade refused to take it over after it was decommissioned. To save the industrial monument, the citizens' initiative "Save the Harbor Crane" was founded, with the goal of restoring and preserving the crane.

Funds provided by the foundation in 2007 supported the renovation of the steel structure's connections.
