The Lockwitzbach is a low mountain stream in the Saxon Lower Eastern Ore Mountains and a left tributary of the upper Elbe.

It rises at 560 m above sea level. NN located headwaters above Oberfrauendorf with the water name Grimmsches Wasser.

On the 20 km long path to the north, the stream breaks through lower mountain ranges twice. These are:

the Wilischgrund, breakthrough valley through the Karsdorf fault above Lungkwitz
the Lockwitzgrund, a narrow section of valley on the southern edge of the Elbe valley below Burgstädtel. Here it leaves the area of the Kreischa Basin, cuts into metamorphic rocks of the Elbe Valley Slate Mountains that run from southeast to northwest and, at the southern exit of Lockwitz in the area of the former Emil Donath juice press, comes into contact with the Cambrian granodiorite from Dohna (around 535 million years old).[ 4][5]

Between these there is a depression in which Kreischa lies, the Kreischa basin. It is a part of the Döhlener Depression with rocks from the Rotlegend.

In Dresden, the stream is taken up by an old Elbe branch south of Großzschachwitz, which it follows to the Laubegast district border. Here, with an almost right-angled bend in its course, it breaks through a Quaternary embankment at the former sawmill right on the border between Elbe gravel and Pleistocene sands. After a few meters it flows into the Elbe between the Dresden districts of Laubegast and Kleinzschachwitz.[6]

In the event of flooding, the Lockwitzbach feeds the Niedersedlitz flood ditch, which flows into the Elbe with the more westerly Geberbach near Tolkewitz.
