Ushuaia is the southernmost city in Argentina and is located on the south side of the Great Tierra del Fuego Island, on the Beagle Channel. Ushuaia is the capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego, which is referred to in German as "Tierra del Fuego". Ushuaia is known above all as the starting point of many former Antarctic expeditions and as the location of the prison Presidio. The convicts, mostly violent criminals but also political prisoners, built the Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino narrow-gauge railway, which today takes tourists through the Tierra del Fuego National Park. Among the most famous prisoners of the Presidio were Carlos Gardel and the writer Ricardo Rojas. The proximity to the Tierra del Fuego National Park and the unique nature of the area has helped Ushuaia become a major tourist destination. Also as a stopover for cruise ships, the city is extremely popular. Since almost all goods must be brought over long distances in the city, Ushuaia today is considered one of the most expensive cities in Argentina and throughout South America.
