The 17 kilometer long, standard gauge “Lauertalbahn” was opened on August 6, 1900 by the Bavarian State Railways. It started at Rottershausen train station and followed the main line for another two kilometers north, with which it also ran through the 400 m long Rottershausen Tunnel. It was only given its own route at the Rannungen junction, where a connecting line to the munitions factory at the Rottershausen forest settlement branched off during the Second World War; It crossed a ridge until it reached the Lauertal near Poppenlauer, which it followed up into the foothills of the Haßberge. At the end of the line in Stadtlauringen there was a stand-alone locomotive shed with a water house as a branch of the Schweinfurt railway depot.
Tunnel near Rannungen (year 1874)

Passenger traffic was always weak and was limited to three pairs of trains a day for decades. After a rail bus line had taken over service on Sundays from 1958, passenger rail transport was also stopped on weekdays at the end of the 1959 summer timetable on October 4, 1959. Its early end is primarily due to the route, which was controversial for years before it opened and did not meet traffic needs. The destination of most travelers was the city of Schweinfurt, which could be reached via a shorter route by bus since 1948/49. Freight traffic also ended on April 1, 1960. The route, on which only steam locomotives were used, was dismantled the following winter.
