The 1.5-mile loop trail is something special. Out here, you are allowed to hiked on the ancient lava beds and explore as far as you like. To follow the loop, keep your eyes peeled for wooden poles with blue paint that are not easy to spot in places. Leave the masses and developed trails of Craters of the Moon National Monument behind and enjoy the freedom and solitude of Hells Half Acre Wilderness Study Area.
You will find so many different shapes of lava rock where you can imagine how the lava flowed through the area. Today, there is cacti, grass and bushes growing on the black surface. Where there are gaps with lots of shade, even ferns have found a place to thrive.
