A church dedicated to St. James was first mentioned in Altmannshausen in 1420. The post-Gothic hall church was built in 1611/12 under Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn and inaugurated in 1613 by Eucharius Sang. The original church tower was destroyed by a hurricane in 1750. In the years from 1801 to 1803 the tower was repaired and a floor was added, which houses the tower clock and the belfry, and was given a slate-covered Welschen hood. During the same period, the nave, which was covered with a gable roof, was widened to the north and a sacristy was added.

The Roman Catholic branch church of St. James the Great, formerly also St. James the Elder, is located in the Altmannshausen parish of Markt Bibart in the Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim district (Middle Franconia, Bavaria). The listed building is registered as a historic monument in the Bavarian Register of Historic Monuments under monument number D-5-75-144-40. The branch church belongs to the Schwarzenberger Land pastoral area of the Archdiocese of Bamberg.
