Lindlar likes to describe itself as "rich in stones". The history and development of the community were and are shaped by the rocks that can be found in the local quarries. Greywacke, a grey-brown to grey-green sedimentary rock, has been mined and processed in the quarries for over 300 years. The natural stone is used to make floor slabs, window surrounds, wall and paving stones and is now known and popular far beyond the local borders.

Numerous historic buildings in and around Lindlar are built with greywacke, the best known and most visible example of this is the Catholic parish church of St. Severin in the heart of the town center.

In addition, impressive fossils can be found in the rocks of the Lindlar quarries. These millions of years old fossils can be discovered during a fossil hunt, where visitors can explore large blocks of stone themselves with a hammer and chisel. Parts of the quarries can also be visited on your own during a hike on the Steinhauerpfad. Information about the 6.2-kilometer circular hiking trail through the quarries can be found here: "
