Wolfenbüttel Castle in Wolfenbüttel is the second largest surviving castle in Lower Saxony. The extensive four-wing complex of the original moated castle served as a Wolfenbüttel residence for the dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg between 1283 and 1754. The castle was destroyed several times by attacks and sieges. The appearance of the castle changed several times even after numerous conversions and additions. Today the castle is used by a high school, the Federal Academy for Cultural Education and a museum.

In the 13th century, the Wolfenbüttel moated castle was built directly on the Oker River, which later became Wolfenbüttel Castle. After being destroyed in 1546, it was rebuilt into a magnificent renaissance castle, which in turn was renovated in the Baroque style in 1691.
Numerous remains of the moated castle can still be seen in today's palace complex. So you can find the foundation walls of the keep in the stairwell, directly in the gate entrance. The magnificent Wolfenbüttel Castle is the center and landmark of the city today.

For centuries, Wolfenbüttel was the Welf royal residence and one of the cultural centers of Northern Germany. At the heart of the city lies Wolfenbüttel Castle, a medieval moated castle. Wolfenbüttel Castle is not only the second largest of its kind in Northern Germany, it also houses the only original High Baroque state apartments in the old state of Brunswick.

The state and private rooms, designed between 1690 and 1740, reflect the former splendor of court life in the residence of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. This is impressively reflected in the magnificent paintings, Baroque furniture, sculptures, and woven carpets. Special exhibitions on selected topics of cultural, artistic, and regional history make a visit to the Wolfenbüttel Castle Museum a special experience.

In October 2024, the Schloss Museum Wolfenbüttel added the 18th-century dinner service known as the "Dutch Service" to its collection – thus displaying one of the most important ensembles of European porcelain art. The "Dutch Service" was manufactured by the Fürstenberg Porcelain Manufactory in the 1770s to the order of an unknown customer from the Netherlands and subsequently painted in the manufactory's stained glass workshop in Braunschweig. Willem Suermondt (1740 to 1828), then mayor of the city of Rotterdam, later acquired the porcelain – presumably for a dinner with the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
