Monteverdi Marittimo is located on a hill, in the center of the Alta Valle di Cornia, on the southern slope of the Colline Metallifere. The position between Val di Cornia and Val di Cecina makes this place the natural gateway between the sea and geothermal energy. Here the sea breeze merges with the warm breath of the earth; the greenery ranges from the vineyards of Bolgheri to the subsoil rich in underground vapors that provide clean energy.

San Walfredo and Sant’Andrea
The Church of Sant’Andrea
The history of Monteverdi Marittimo is closely linked to that of the Benedictine abbey of San Pietro a Palazzuolo, founded in 754 by Benedictine monks led by the Lombard San Walfredo, founder of the Counts of Gherardesca and patron saint of the town. Its are preserved oratory of the Santissimo Sacramento. The 13th century when it passed to the Vallombrosan monks.
Today only some parts of the ancient structure remain of the abbey.
Among the attractions to see in Monteverdi Marittimo, there is the fourteenth-century Church of Sant’Andrea, with a single nave, which preserves the Black Christ and a stone pile of Roman origin, which served as a baptismal font.
The Ruga Buia (Via Ricasoli) is one of the most evocative streets. The Piazzetta della Torre, in ancient times the site of the cemetery of the brotherhood of Misericordia, one of the oldest places.
