A church was initially not planned in the founding city plan of 1827, and it was only decided in 1842 to build it. However, the first attempt at construction in 1846 failed due to the soft marsh soil. In 1853, according to the plans of Simon Loschen, who also designed the old lighthouse , 552 posts were driven into the ground in order to build the three-aisled hall church with apse and west tower. The building was made of red brick and decorated with colored glazed clinker bricks, the side facades received Gothic pointed arches. The church building shows many medieval details, but is designed according to classical principles.
