Fortress Bourtange was built under the command of William the Silent and completed in 1593. Its original purpose was to control the only road between Germany and the city of Groningen, which was controlled by the Spanish during the Eighty Years' War.

After experiencing its last battle in 1672, the fortress continued to serve in the defensive network on the German border until it was finally abandoned in 1851 and converted into a village. Bourtange now serves as a 'living' historical museum with authentic cafes, restaurants and accommodations.

I took a look at Bourtange and attended a lecture about the fortress. It's very interesting what happened in the past. Finally, Bourtange lost importance due to changed trade routes. Today the fortress is used for living and is therefore a living monument. The Dutch are very pragmatic about some things and have saved the fortress from decay.

Definitely look and stay. The Dutch national dish also tastes great here: Appelgebak met slagroom.
