The Wittmoor nature reserve is the last raised bog in the north of Hamburg.
It was created over thousands of years in a depression of ice age moraines in a side valley of the Alster and was extensively peated until 1958. Part of the bog has been preserved.
In 1978, the Wittmoor was declared a nature reserve. Drainage ditches were closed again and two raised bog lakes have now formed in the middle of the peat-extracted area. The peat-extracted areas are now soaked again and the dying birch trees in the area are signs of new bog formation.
The Wittmoor nature reserve is an insider tip all year round. You can hike there in peace and quiet and enjoy nature. You should only avoid the area after long periods of rain. Then you will no longer be able to walk the paths with dry feet. You should bring your own food. There are no cafes or restaurants along the paths for a stopover. But a picnic in the moor sounds tempting.

Bult-Schlenken complexes, often also referred to as step complexes, are special surface forms in the central areas of rain bogs (rain bog width) and in intermediate bogs.
Elevated crests of peat and peat moss (sphagnum) or brown moss (Amblystegiaceae) - so-called bulges - together with wet, partly water-filled depressions - so-called Schlenken - form a characteristic micro-relief.
Depending on the moor water level and the nutrient conditions as well as the different site requirements of the plant species, the various zones have different plant formations in the smallest of spaces.
