The Bishop's Palace (1778-1783) is one of the most beautiful Hungarian architectural monuments of the late Baroque or so-called Zopf style. The external splendor of the U-shaped building is also matched by its richly decorated interior and furnishings. Among the smaller or larger halls on the first floor, the impressive size, frescoes and furniture of the large hall are particularly pleasing to the eye. The grisaille paintings of the Great Hall, depicting scenes from Savaria's history, as well as the ceiling frescoes were painted by Franz Anton Maulbertsch (1724-1796), the outstanding artist of the romantic Baroque style. Blessed Charles IV was a guest in the palace several times.
