Today, January 27th, 2024, was the day of remembrance for the liberation of Jewish prisoners from the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945.

Between July 23, 1944 and May 9, 2945, the Allied Victory and Occupation Powers dissolved 17 existing, not yet evacuated concentration camps (these were harsh labor camps with extremely inhumane prison conditions) and freed the people of predominantly Jewish descent who had been tortured to death in them. Before World War II and the rise of the National Socialists with their populist, popular hatred of Jews, Jewish life and culture were omnipresent in Germany and were generally well tolerated and accepted by the German people.

The cemeteries were separated according to religion and set up in different locations. In some cases there were also Jewish prayer houses, the synagogues. The cemeteries were mostly outside the towns, not near the synagogues.
