The “Upper Gate” is part of the medieval, late Gothic fortifications of Schlüsselfeld and consists of the massive west tower above the gate and a three-sided outwork with massive surrounding walls and a two-story outer gate set in front of the city wall.
The first part of the tower was built between 1466 and 1495 as part of the expansion of the city fortifications under Prince-Bishop Rudolf von Scherenberg.

In 1390 the town of Schlüsselfeld finally became part of the diocese of Würzburg. Due to its exposed location and because of its economic importance, the new masters had it fortified very quickly.
At this time it was probably a wooden palisade fence and a moat. This fortification served primarily to protect against robbers.
