In 1299, Schijndel was first mentioned as Skinle.

Schijndel is said to owe its name to an oak forest, where at that time people went to collect bark (skin) for the preparation of run (a material used for tanning hides). Other sources speak of a schijn (ghost) and loo (forest): haunted forest.

The first exploitations took place in the early Middle Ages on fertile forest lands along the Aa. In the earliest period, Schijndel was part of the County of Rode (Sint-Oedenrode). During that period, the inhabitants of Schijndel were referred to as "Rodenaren" and the village received its costumes and land rights according to Roois law.

With the sale of the County of Rode by the Count of Gelre to the Duke of Brabant, Schijndel became part of the Duchy of Brabant in the 13th century as part of the Meierij of 's-Hertogenbosch and remained under the Peelland quarter. Schijndel has been officially a municipality since 1309, when Duke John II of Brabant gave the parishioners the right to use municipal land. The size of the municipality of Schijndel was already somewhat fixed around 1299, when the Duke of Brabant named the village boundary when the Koeveringse mill was founded at the place where the limits of Sint-Oedenrode, Veghel and Schijndel came together.
